Make a silver ring at The JQ Set Birmingham

Beginners Silver Ring Course – Saturdays

This beginners ring-making course takes place every Saturday for 3 weeks, starting Saturday 6th July 2024, from 10am to 4pm.

Learn how to make a silver ring in our bright and shiny jewellery making workshop in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.  A unique and personalised piece of jewellery for you to wear home at the end of the course or to give away as a gift.

The JQ Set’s jewellery making courses are different from most other hobby-level courses. I have designed a series of set projects which teach specific jewellery skills to the level I learnt on my intensive handskills course at university (a 2 year full-time course which unfortunately discontinued back in 2012). Having this apprentice-level training enabled my career change from structural engineering to becoming a bench jeweller and tutor, and to me it feels essential that these skills are offered as part-time jewellery courses in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, the heart of the British jewellery industry.

What is the set project on the beginners course?
You will learn to make a wide silver ring band incorporating your very own cut-out design, along with a flat practice piece in silver too. This project is exactly the same as the one on the evening class format – the Beginners Silver Ring Evening Course.

Can you customise this set project?
You can design your own saw-pierced pattern for this project, and pick the ring size to suit whoever will be wearing it. The ring band width and thickness are set to enable a wide variety of designs, whilst retaining its strength and without making the soldering too difficult. It’s a carefully considered balance!

Who is this course for?
•  Complete beginners to jewellery making, who want to learn to make jewellery independently
•  Students who have attended one of our Taster classes (or jewellery experience days elsewhere)
•  Improvers who haven’t been making in a while and want to brush up on their skills (especially piercing and soldering)
•  Jewellery makers who particularly struggle with soldering – My beginners course goes deeper and in more detail on soldering than any of my other courses, and most other tutors courses too (I’m a real detail-orientated person, and I love my tips and tricks!)

What jewellery skills will you learn on this course?
All the basics, giving you a strong foundation in jewellery making skills. You will be taught thoroughly enough that you will be able make other pieces of jewellery on your own that use the same techniques.
•  Pierced pattern making skills:  Design considerations for strength and difficulty level,  Drilling (using a pendant motor),  Saw-Piercing,  Filing
•  Forming skills:  Ring-bending,  Aligning solder joints on rings,  Making a ring round
•  Heat-based jewellery skills:  Equipment needed,  Annealing,  Soldering,  Pickling
•  Finishing skills:  Buffing for a mirror finish,  Polishing (using a pendant motor and large polishing motor), Cleaning

When does this course take place?
It takes place over three consecutive Saturday daytimes from 10.00-16.00, with a 1 hour break for lunch and plenty of nice cafes nearby to choose from. The workshop is closed to students and locked over the lunchbreak.

How is this course taught?
This course is an in-person course, meaning you will benefit from real-time support, feedback and troubleshooting – this can make ALL the difference when learning craftsmanship skills to a high level! That’s the very real advantage to my in-person teaching, compared to the demonstrations you can watch from online courses and videos. I will make the project alongside you step by step, and will use my piece to show you how to make this piece of jewellery using a camera over my bench and a big tv screen. You will be provided with a printed handout in case you need a little reminder along the way, and to refer back to if you’d like to make it again another time. Each class takes you through the next stage of the process of ring-making, so please make sure you can attend all the dates.

What’s included in the price?
Everything! You’ll have your own bench spot with tools to use, and access to the larger shared equipment in The JQ Set’s professional workshop. All the materials you’ll need, including the sterling silver for the set project, are included. You will need to bring reading glasses, if you wear them, and a notebook and pen.

What’s next after this beginners course?
That depends on your jewellery goals! If you want to be able to work on your own designs independently, then you’ll have already learnt enough skills to get started. I recommend building on the skills you’ve learnt on this course, and add new ones to your toolbox on the Domed Pendant and Earring course and the Wax Carving course to give yourself more design options. However, you can pick from any of the Improver 1 level courses after completing the beginners course as each one teaches brand new skills compared to the beginners course (although some will be slightly trickier than others). I love ambition and plenty of my students hop up to the rubover stone-setting courses – either the Stone-Set Stacking Rings courses or the Oval Cabochon Ring. If you can’t see any dates that work for you, please sign up to our Newsletter to find out first when the next round of courses are available to book.
