Beginners Wax-Carving: Make a Silver Pendant
This course takes place every Wednesday evening for 6 weeks, starting Wednesday 10th August.
Learn how to make jewellery using wax-carving techniques, in our bright and shiny jewellery making workshop in Birmingham. You will learn to make a silver pendant with your choice of deep-relief design! A wonderful and personalised pendant for you to wear home at the end of the course or to give away as a gift.
This jewellery making course can be classed as a Beginners or an Improvers course! To make the majority of your own designs into pieces of jewellery, you’ll need the extra metal-working skills from our Beginners course, but on this wax-carving course you’ll learn everything you need to make a pendant. It takes place over three consecutive Saturdays from 10.00am-4.00pm, with a 1-hour break for lunch and plenty of nice cafes nearby to choose from. You will start this course by moving away from metalwork, and into making from wax. First we’ll had a chat about when to use wax rather than metal for jewellery-making, and you’ll have a bit of practice and experimentation on a few bits of wax. Then we’ll talk through your designs and get you started on your final design. The next classes will be spent creating your final piece in wax, which will be taken for casting at the end of the fifth class, and on the final class we will work on the silver piece that you get back from the casters, finishing it into your shiny silver piece of jewellery. You will be provided with a printed handout in case you need a little reminder along the way, and to refer back to if you’d like to make another! Each class takes you through the next stage of the process, so please make sure you can attend all the dates.
You will need to bring your own apron to class, along with reading glasses if you wear them and a notebook and pen.
This course adds some completely new techniques to your skill-set, moving away from metalwork and into wax-carving (you will be taught a few basic metalwork skills to finish your piece). Following on from this course, you could add to your skills by learning all the foundation skills for jewellery-making (incl soldering) on the Beginners course, or if you’ve already done that one, you could move on to the more advanced sweat-soldering on the Domed Pendant and Earring project, or stone-setting on our Stone-Set Stacking Rings course.
