The Saw-Pierced Silver Ring Course teaches our beginners students the foundation skills of jewellery making. After learning these skills, you can go on to develop and top-up with new skills on our jewellery courses for Improvers.
In this project you will make your own sterling silver ring band. Starting with a flat strip of silver, you will design your own cut-out pattern to drill and saw-pierce into the metal. You will learn techniques to neaten the pattern before bending the sheet around to meet at a joint which you will solder closed. You will then shape the ring, and buff and polish the silver to a mirror shine.
Our courses are taught by experienced jewellers who will demonstrate the processes step-by-step, making their own jewellery project alongside you. There will also be a printed handout to remind you of the steps and to take home with you. Outside of the demonstrations, the tutor will go around the group checking in on how the students are getting on, answer questions and assist where necessary, and they will also work on the demo piece which you can watch for further tips and tricks.
The skills this project covers includes: marking, drilling, saw-piercing, filing, annealing, forming (bending/shaping), soldering, buffing and polishing. You will be inducted on various hand tools, pendant motor, jewellery torch, pickle, large polishing motor and ultrasonic cleaner.
All tools and materials for the project are provided and included in the cost, as well as a few lovely cups of tea! (or coffee, or herbal tea, whatever you’d prefer!)
