Rent a Jewellery Bench

You can rent a bench in The JQ Set’s bright and airy jewellery studio.

Long-term and short-term bench spots are offered here in the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter

Studio Sessions

Studio Sessions are short-term rent-a-bench spots that are available in under-subscribed classes, in 2.5hr morning/afternoon/evening slots.

Jewellers who use these Studio Sessions usually have a project they want to finish off (say, students who missed a session of a course), or they want access to equipment that they don’t have at home.

Become a Resident Jeweller

Long-term bench rentals at The JQ Set, for a minimum 6 months, are available to experienced jewellers.

By becoming one of our Resident Jewellers, you will get 24hr access to a 2 metre wide bench spot and the shared jewellery tools and equipment in the workshop.

Studio Sessions

Short Term Bench Rentals:

Studio Sessions are rent-a-bench spots that are available during any under-subscribed classes. They cost £15 for 2.5hr, or £25 for a full day, which is 5hr plus a 1hr lunch break. The spots are booked on a waitlist basis, with availability confirmed before the course starts.

The bench spot is kitted out with hand tools and a pendant motor, and you will have access to the studio’s shared jewellery tools and equipment. You will need to supply your own materials (including solder) and consumables (saw blades, drill bits etc). There will be a selection of silver findings, solder and consumables available to buy from the Studio Shop. See section 3.1a of the Booking T&Cs for what we mean by materials and consumables.

The JQ Set is a “clean” workshop so please limit the materials you use to “clean” metals like silver, gilding metal and copper. Any other materials (wood, perspex/acrylic, steel etc) will need approval before use in the workshop.

The bench spaces are rented on a “supervised but untutored” basis – there will be a maximum of 5 minutes Q&A with the tutor during your session. To work at the bench spot safely, you will need to have a safety induction on the equipment you intend to use.

As a Resident Jeweller, you will have your own large jewellery bench, and access to the studio’s shared jewellery tools and equipment. You are expected to use your own bench tools, materials and consumables, which you can buy from the many local suppliers in the Jewellery Quarter. The monthly rent includes all bills, and you’ll have your own set of keys to give you 24hr access.

Our long-term renters use the workshop to run their own jewellery businesses, mostly part-time during the evenings and weekends. That said, the long-term bench spaces are rented on an unsupervised basis – you should expect there to be times when you will be working alone in the workshop. Most of our Resident Jewellers work “in the trade” during the day, ie in the jewellery manufacturing and designing industry located around Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. By joining us, you’ll get some instant industry connections – between us, we’ll know who to recommend for outwork and specialist skills.

Details:

  • The jewellery benches for Resident Jewellers are 2 metres wide, and are kitted out with a bench skin, chair, LED task lamp, surge-protected extension lead and plastic storage boxes as drawers. The minimum rental period for the long-term benches is 6 months, and the notice period to leave is 3 months.

    • You will need to supply your own bench tools (hand tools and a pendant motor, or equivalent), materials (“clean” metals like silver, gilding metal and copper) and consumables (sawblades, drill bits, buff paper, polishing compounds and mops, etc).
    • The shared large equipment includes a ring stretcher, rolling mill, polishing motor and barreller, doming set, mandrels (for rings, bezels, bangles), vice, steel blocks, sievert torch and hearth, pickle pot and ultrasonic.
    • There is some larger equipment that is not shared, ie belongs to Resident Jewellers, for which you would need permission to use each and every time.
    • The JQ Set is a “clean” workshop, so you can only use “clean” materials here – any contaminating materials, like aluminium, lead and pewter, are banned in the studio. Other materials like wood, perspex/acrylic, steel, resin, etc will need approval before use in the workshop.
    • The workshop is a client-facing space, so the shared areas need to be kept clean and tidy. It is not suitable for jewellers who mostly carry out work that is noisy, messy, or that use hazardous chemicals.
    • During class times, you are asked not to do disruptive work (hours of heavy hammering, polishing, casting etc). Class tutors and students will have priority over the shared equipment, although every effort will be made to share.
    • Bills are included in the rent for part-time and reasonable use of the workshop (up to 20hrs/week). Additional bill contributions will be required if you are working full-time hours in the studio, using a disproportionate amount of the shared consumables (like the propane tank) or using high wattage equipment (ie electrical heating appliances like hot plates or kilns).
    • Visitors are allowed by appointment only (for commissions etc), and you’ll need to inform the Resident Jewellers of the appointment in advance. The workshop is not suitable for a jewellery business with daily visitors, like outwork being dropped off and picked up, etc.
    • To work safely, you will need to have had safety inductions plus experience on the equipment you intend to use. It will be your responsibility to ensure your own safety, which is especially important when lone working.
    • Activities that are a potential conflict of interest to The JQ Set or other Resident Jewellers (such as sharing or sub-letting your bench, tutoring from your rented bench, etc) would need special written permission.
    • There will be a security deposit and rent in advance to pay upon signing the space-sharing agreement – please note this agreement is legally different from a tenancy or sub-tenancy agreement.
    • You’ll need to be dog friendly, as my dog Tino is in the workshop a lot!

    Includes:

    • Bench spot
    • Shared tools and equipment
    • Kitchenette
    • Bills (reasonable use) incl. wifi
    • Tables for hot-desking

    £120 / month
