The JQ Set
Studio 6, 85 Spencer St,
The JQ Set is a 22 minute walk from Birmingham New Street Station, or a 16 minute walk from Birmingham Snow Hill. It can be quicker to walk from the city centre than to wait for a bus, tram (Metro) or train. We would suggest taking a route via Ludgate Hill and through St Paul’s Square, then up Caroline Street as it’s a little prettier and you might find somewhere nice to grab a coffee on the way!
The nearest train and tram (Metro) station is the Jewellery Quarter Station, which is 2 minutes from The JQ Set – as you come out of the station, cross over the pedestrian crossing and turn right, then take the next left into Hockley St and walk until the roundabout. Walk around to the second exit off the roundabout by the Jewellers Arms pub, and number 85 Spencer Street is 3 doors down from the pub, next to Cafe Neo.
Trains arrive into Birmingham either at New Street Station, or at Moor Street Station (or Snow Hill Station which is closer) which are all a fairly easy walk from The JQ Set (see above).
If you’d prefer, from New St you can catch the tram (Metro) onwards to the Jewellery Quarter Station from Stephenson St (follow the overhead signs for Trams inside Grand Central), or from Moor St and Snow Hill you can catch the local train onwards to the Jewellery Quarter Station (catch trains to Stourbridge Junction and Kidderminster).
The Jewellery Quarter is easily accessible by bicycle, especially if you’d like to use the flat towpaths of the canals in your route. You are welcome to bring your bicycle inside rather than locking it up on the street, so long as it’s not too mucky!
From the centre of Birmingham there are a number of bus routes that serve the Jewellery Quarter.
The 101 buses leave from bus stop NH1 on Newhall St (you can walk there in 7min straight up Bennetts Hill) and stop at The Clock stop – from there walk up Vyse St to the Jewellery Quarter Station and the follow the directions above.
The 16 and 16W buses leave from bus stop MS3 opposite Moor St Station and stop at the Vyse St stop – from there take a 2min walk down Hockley St until you reach the Jewellers Arms pub, and number 85 Spencer Street is 3 doors down from the pub, next to Cafe Neo.
There is on-street Pay and Display parking on Spencer Street (Mon-Sat 08.00-18.00) with a 2 hour maximum – this isn’t suitable for our daytime classes but is fine for our evening classes. Please note that our evening classes start at 18.00 so you might need to pay for an hour (or not, at your own risk of a ticket!). Ticket machines require coins or telephone payment (it takes a while to register if it’s the first time you use the telephone system).
There is a multi-storey Pay and Display car park on Vyse Street (Mon-Sat 06.00-20.30) opposite the cemetery (rear entrance on Augusta Street) with up to 10 hours parking available – this isn’t suitable for our evening classes as the car park is locked up at 20.30 but is fine for our daytime classes. Ticket machines require coins or telephone payment (it takes a while to register if it’s the first time you use the telephone system).
There are also blocks of free on-street parking with a 4 hour maximum available on Branston Street (parallel to Spencer Street), and further afield on Kenyon Street, Pitsford Street and Great Hampton Street. These are very popular spaces and are often full, and can be intermingled with blocks of permit-only parking so please check the street signs carefully.
The JQ Set is a jewellery school in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter running evening and weekend jewellery making courses.
